Caring for your new boards.
Formatt boards are designed to last, but you can extend the life of your boards by caring for them properly. Here's how to keep them in great condition.

A Simple Routine to Remember
Wipe board after every use.
After each use, wipe your board down with a damp cloth or give it a quick wash with warm, soapy water. Always dry it immediately with a tea towel - never leave it sitting in water or submerged in the sink, as prolonged moisture causes the wood to swell, warp, and eventually crack.
Stand it upright or prop it at an angle to allow air to circulate on both sides as it finishes drying.
Hand wash only.
Formatt boards are hand wash only - avoid putting your timber board in the dishwasher. The combination of heat, steam, and prolonged water exposure is one of the quickest ways to ruin even a high-quality board.
Long term maintenance

Re-oiling your board
Oiling is the most important part of long-term board care. It replenishes the natural moisture in the wood, preventing it from drying out, cracking, and becoming a harbour for bacteria.
When to oil:
Oil your board whenever it starts to look dry or pale, or when water no longer beads on the surface. For a heavily used board, this might be once a month; for occasional use, every few months is usually enough.
What to use:
Always use a food-safe oil. At Formatt, we use a food-grade mineral oil. It's odourless, tasteless, and won't go rancid.
How to oil:
Apply a generous amount of oil to all surfaces — top, bottom, and all four sides — using a cloth or paper towel. Rub it in with the grain and allow it to soak in for several hours or overnight. Wipe away any excess that hasn't been absorbed and repeat the process two to three times for a thorough seasonal treatment.

Re-waxing your board
After oiling, applying a board wax or cream adds an extra layer of protection, helping to seal the surface and repel moisture more effectively. Wax is not a substitute for oil — the oil nourishes the wood from within, while the wax protects the outer surface.
Apply a small amount of food-safe beeswax or a dedicated board wax using a cloth, working it into the surface in circular motions. Leave it to absorb for 20–30 minutes, then buff to a smooth finish.
This step is especially worthwhile for end grain boards, which are more porous and absorb moisture more readily.
Waxing every few months — or whenever you do a deep oil treatment — will keep the surface looking rich and help the board resist staining.
